There are some wonderful fandom posts/discussions happening on LJ at the moment. Although I haven't been participating in them as such (I find I don't have anything to add that hasn't already been said) I'm enjoying them immensely. They remind me of times gone by and the discussions (not usually quite as friendly as the most recent ones) that used to take place while the show was still on the air.

You can find the most recent posts/discussions at [personal profile] shapinglight's LJ here and [profile] shadowkat67's LJ here and here.

Warning: These posts discuss the AR from "Seeing Red", so probably best to avoid if this subject is a triggery one for you.

I have my own thoughts on the bathroom scene and how it made me feel when I first saw it (on Sky One, complete with ad break), but I don't think there's anything I could say now that hasn't already been said at one time or another over the years.

So the latest Buffy comic is out.

Huh.

Now that's going to make me want to start reading S9 again!

So, here's that 30 Days of Buffy meme that went around a while ago, all in one day!

I first posted this in 2008, but felt the time was right to post a much needed reminder of why I love Spike and Buffy and the Spuffy relationship as much as I do.

It's so cold I think I'm getting frostbite. Lol!

So the comic cut for issue #39 spoilers )

No disrespect intended to those of you who like them, but I can find absolutely nothing redeemable about the comics at all. I stuck with them for as long as I possibly could, hoping that they would improve over time, but instead they just kept on getting worse and worse. Very few of the characters are even recognisable as the characters I know and love, and as far as I'm concerned Buffy and Angel (two of my favourite characters of all time) have had their characters ripped to shreds.

Enough is enough.

Not so long ago I would have been devastated by this news...but now? *shrugs* Not so much. I think I've finally (after all these years) made my peace with the end of the show.

Don't get me wrong, it isn't that I've fallen out of love with BtVS the show or the Spike/Buffy relationship. It's that any remake or reboot isn't going to be the Buffy the Vampire Slayer I know and love. And without the Scoobies, or Spike, or Angel, I have zero interest in whatever it is they decide to come up with. I love the TV show with all of my heart, but time moves on and things change, and I think it's inevitable that the Buffy the Vampire Slayer franchise will move on with it.

And...I'm okay with that.

I never thought the time would come when I would ever say that, but...I really am okay with it.

I'm certainly not against a reboot if it's done well (although I think it's way too soon to be honest), and I hope the resulting movie is a good one. But what made Buffy the Vampire Slayer such a great show for me was its characters, and without them? It just won't be my Buffy the Vampire Slayer. But if you're a new fan seeing Buffy for the very first time, and have no idea just how wonderfully rich and complex the original show and its characters were (are)? Then maybe, just maybe, it will work for you.

And I'll be happy for all those new fans who will be discovering Buffy for the very first time, and not a little envious of those who will go on to discover the TV show for the very first time, seeing with fresh eyes all the things that made Buffy the Vampire Slayer such an iconic show in the first place.

So I genuinely hope the rebooted movie does well. But as for me? I'll be sticking with the TV show and fanfic, thank you very much. And fondly remembering how fandom used to be in the good old days, before it slowly started to slip away and the time grew ever closer for the porch lights to finally go out.

Day 28 - First TV show obsession

There have been a few shows I've been obsessive about over the years, where I couldn't miss a single episode, and would drop everything to make sure that I didn't. But the two that come to mind first are ER and The X-Files. I watched them both from the first episode and completely fell in love with them.

But if we're talking about obsession that includes being involved in a fandom, discussing every aspect of the show to death, reading fanfic, and still talking about the show long after it's been off air, then there's only one TV show it could be, and that's Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

I don't think there will ever be another TV show like it for me. The Buffyverse was what first drew me into online fandom, and without it I would never have met all of you. It literally changed my life, and for that I will always be truly grateful.

The first 22 days )

I missed a day yesterday as LJ wasn't loading for me.

Day 23 - Most annoying character

This is an easy one to answer: Chloe O'Brian from 24. I will never understand why they kept bringing her back season after season. Not only is she the most annoying character ever, but the actress who plays her CAN'T ACT! She really is awful.

Day 24 - Best quote

From BtVS episode After Life:

Spike to Buffy: I do remember what I said. The promise. To protect her. (pause) If I had done that ... even if I didn't make it ... you wouldn't have had to jump. But I want you to know I did save you. Not when it counted, of course, but ... after that. Every night after that. I'd see it all again ... do something different. Faster or more clever, you know? Dozens of times, lots of different ways ... (softly) Every night I save you.

Thanks to the invaluable Buffyverse Dialogue Database for the quote.

Sorry for the lack of replies to comments. As I said above, LJ has been a nightmare to load over the last few days. It seems better today, so I'll respond to comments as soon as I can.

Day 21 - Favorite ship

Another one that won't come as a surprise to anyone who knows me.

My favourite ship of all time is Spike/Buffy. I'm not going to go into the reasons why I love them as much as I do, as there isn't anything I could say here that I haven't already said before. All I will say is that I doubt I'll ever fall for another TV pairing in quite the same way as I did with Spike/Buffy.

My second favourite ship is Desmond/Penny on Lost, although I've never felt any need to read fanfic about them the way I have with Spike/Buffy. Their story is perfect just the way it is.

Day 09 - Best scene ever

This may seem like the obvious choice, but I'm going to go for it anyway.

My favourite scenes from any TV show ever are:

Day 01 - A show that never should have been canceled: Journeyman
Day 02 - A show you wish more people were watching: Being Erica
Day 03 - Your favorite new show (aired this TV season): The Vampire Diaries
Day 04 - Your favorite show ever: Buffy the Vampire Slayer
Day 05 - A show you hate: The Life of Riley/Big Top
Day 06 - Favorite episode of your favorite TV show: FFL/OMWF

Day 07 - Least favorite episode of your favorite TV show:

There are scenes from certain episodes that I loathe with a fiery passion, but I can't say they are my least favourite episodes as there are still things about them that I like. So instead of going for the obvious choices, I've gone for the episode I never rewatch as I just find it too silly.

So my least favourite episode of BtVS is: I Robot, You Jane.

Fic Rec

After a long hiatus, Lostboy has updated his wonderful story Clocks of the Long Now.

Summary: This story begins post-Chosen, then rockets into an angsty, dystopian post-NFA future that finds Buffy questioning the loyalties of her closest allies.

This is a "Spuffy" tale, in the sense that it is the Buffy romance that is explored (and respected.) However, the relationship itself is not the primary focus of the book. It's an ensemble piece.

Highly recommended.

Let's hope we don't have quite as long to wait until the next update! :)

This is so much more interesting than the comics themselves! :D

[livejournal.com profile] sueworld2003 keeps us updated (expect spoilers for S8):

And there's more...

Love them or loathe them, the comics have definitely got people talking about the Buffyverse again!
caliente_uk: (vamp spike)
Do you know what amuses me most about the latest spoiler from the BtVS S8 comics?

So many people (and I include myself in this) keep on saying that they 'really don't care what happens', that they're 'not interested' and that they 'don't count what happens in the comics as canon', and yet...when something happens that they really don't like (or really do like - it works both ways!)? They can't help but post about it, expressing their displeasure (or amusement *g*) at the latest development!

So it strikes me that they care about what happens so much more than they like to admit!

And that's understandable.

Spoilers for S8 )

But putting the comics to one side for a moment...

I've been thinking about fandom lately, and how other people see those of us who are involved in one. Without naming any names, I've been dabbling in a few other fandoms lately (but mainly on the outside looking in)...and I haven't really liked what I've seen. There are some seriously weird people out there! And I have to wonder - is that how other people see us? Do we come across like that to them?

*ponders*

*looks up*

*reads own post*

I guess that answers that one then! *g*

Spike Talk

Aug. 29th, 2009 12:17 pm
caliente_uk: (Ever Changing Spike by kazzy_cee)
There have been some fascinating discussions about Spike taking place on LJ over the last couple of days. People seem to interpret the show (and Spike) in so many different ways. It's almost as if some people were watching a completely different show to the one I saw! As I said - fascinating. ETA: A discussion is also only a discussion if people are allowed to express opposing viewpoints. That's what makes fandom discussions so fascinating in the first place!

But one thing remains consistent throughout these discussions - and that's our interest and fascination in Spike. That's some accomplishment, when you think about it. It's been more than a decade since Spike first burst on to our screens, knocking down the 'Welcome to Sunnydale' sign...and stealing many of our hearts in the process. Our opinions may differ, but that's okay. Fandom would be a boring place if we always agreed on everything - and Spike would never have held our attention for so long if he was Mr Perfect.

Yes, Spike is definitely a complex and interesting character, and I suspect he will continue to be the focus of many fandom discussions for a long time to come.

And after more than a decade, that truly is a remarkable accomplishment. :)

For those of you still interested, I am planning to continue my Spike: Through the Years series, but it will have to be put on hiatus until the New Year. I have the last bit of Season 4 to post and then we'll be on to Season 5, which I'm so looking forward to doing! :)

Hope you're all having a great weekend.
