Date: 2010-03-06 07:46 pm (UTC)And the most important person to Angel is Angel of course.
I'm still a bit behind on my penguin!porn reading though. :D

Date: 2010-03-06 07:53 pm (UTC)Heh. I almost listed Angel as a choice, but thought it might be a bit too mean. But as much as I love Angel, I'd have to agree woth you! *g*
There's nothing quite like penguin!porn. \o/

Date: 2010-03-06 07:57 pm (UTC)Beyond that, I might have said the Slayers as a whole, though Buffy doesn't seem to care much about them after letting them die by the hundreds in an idiotic battle (and then screwing Angel over them).
In these comics, after reading dozens of pages of Buffy whining about how difficult her life was, screwing a subordinate who had feelings for her, letting future!people die without lifting a finger to help, and robbing banks...I'm afraid that the most important person to Buffy is...Buffy.

Date: 2010-03-06 08:17 pm (UTC)I have read the online spoilers and much of the discussions, and here's why I won't be reading the comics and think that Joss has been to The Well Of Crackfic and Too Much LA Pixelated Bottled Water:
Buffy flies.
Angel flies.
Buffy glows.
Angel glows.
Angel, ensouled/human is killing people.
The lead writer has been quoted as saying that the most important person in Angel's life is Buffy. Pishtosh. IMO, the most important person in Angel's life is Connor. He changed the world for him; he endangered time (as we know it) for him.
'Ships in the Jossverse: I follow/read most of the 'ships, and if the writer is really, really, good, I can buy most of the 'ships. However, I do have weird favorites.
I absolutely adore Angel/Buffy fanfic that's set about 1-2 years AFTER Chosen/After the Fall. I could just....eat it up. I love their reunions as mature, human adults. It hits the romantic kink for me.
I love reading Spike/Buffy "What ifs?" that posit a Spike/Buffy relationship that alters the finale of Season 5, and is set After the Fall.
I love reading Angel/Spike that brings them together after the appearance of Chipped!Spike and after Spike's entrance in Angel Season 5, and post-After the Fall.
After so many years of reading fanfic and watching the series and reading all the meta, I love the idea of Buffy without Angel, Spike, etc, as a maturing woman who makes her own choices and takes responsibility for her life. IOW - as a feminist character.
I really, really, don't like Buffy - at all - when she is completed by a guy. I don't care who the guy is.
Thank you, Cal for doing this survey. It's given me the opportunity to think a bit --- and I may just cross-post this over on my LJ. ::hugs:: You are just THE BEST.

Date: 2010-03-07 12:05 am (UTC)IMO this is professional fanfic and unless Whedon does something brilliant in the finale I'll be glad I never read the comics (though I've skimmed through a few).

But now they are giving us LSD. It doesn't fix my nicotine desire at all and sends me on a bad trip instead.

Date: 2010-03-06 08:38 pm (UTC)Oh I forgot - I don't want Spike in Season 8 any longer because I've heard what Joss made with the persons he has in Season 8. And I fear adding Spike to the mix will be bad for Spuffy (or Spike).

Date: 2010-03-06 10:50 pm (UTC)I try to think of the comics and the TV show as being two very different things. I see them both as having their own canon, in the same way that True Blood has book!canon and show!canon. The only similarity is that they're based around characters with the same names.
I have mixed feelings on the Spike issue. In some ways I really don't want him to appear, but there's a part of me that can't help but be interested in what part he's likely to play if/when he does appear.

Date: 2010-03-06 09:58 pm (UTC)1. Something doesn't stop being canon because you happen to dislike where the writer has taken the story.
2, 4. They're not "the same" as the TV show, they're recognisably those same people two years older and with new experiences.
5. I think it's about even between Buffy and Connor, in fact. But I note that nobody connected to the comics has actually said that Buffy is "the most important person in Angel's life"; what Scott Allie actually said is that in his opinion she's the most important person in Angel's story. That's a completely different matter; he was talking about the dramatic narrative, not psychoanalysing Angel.
6. It's evil of me, but the more I hear people cry "Please keep Spike away from S8!", the more I'm looking forward to his appearance. (Or re-appearance, since he was in 'Always Darker' already.)
7. Interesting that just about all the people expressing their opinion in your poll, other than me, are not actually reading the comics anyway.
8. I don't have one. But any relationship which is dramatic, compelling, sexy, angsty, romantic, abusive or otherwise non-boring is good in my eyes.
no subject
Date: 2010-03-07 02:20 am (UTC)I disagree. I think Allie was talking about the S8 narrative with respect to what Joss thinks is most important to Angel. But I don't see any other way to interpret "in the most general sense, what matters most to the character of Angel?" as meaning anything other than what (or who) is the most important thing to Angel overall, not just with respect to S8.
Of course, I also realize that's nothing more than Allie's personal opinion, and thus has no bearing on Angel's actual characterization.

Date: 2010-03-06 10:40 pm (UTC)I thought it was stupid to have vampires sparkle. To find out that Joss now thinks Buffy can fly while glowing... *shakes head sadly*
In my little bubble, it all ended in an alley. With Spike and Angel fighting a dragon together, while Buffy was having a good time in Rome. They may or may not survive, she may one day make up her mind as to what she wants. But it hasn't happened yet.

Date: 2010-03-06 11:05 pm (UTC)As for OTP, I think I've decided that I don't have one, although I do have pairings that I will read before any other, or pairings that I prefer to write/read.
And given what I've seen of the latest comics, Angel has definitely become Edward Cullen, and Buffy... Well. The jury is still out on her.

BtVS is the only show I've ever had an OTP in. I have other pairings I enjoy, but Spuffy is my only real OTP. :)

On first impressions, Angel is very Edward Cullen-like in S8. And Buffy is unrecognisable as the Buffy I loved on the show.

Date: 2010-03-07 01:57 pm (UTC)I've liked almost all of the Spike comics. I enjoyed some of the Angel AtF comics, although I have stopped buying them now.
I'm picking up my copy tomorrow, so can't comment except based on what everyone else has been talking about.
I'll look forward to hearing what you think! :)

Date: 2010-03-07 05:52 am (UTC)2-3. Buffy is a comic character now as in different medium (not TV) and you can laugh (if you can) at what she's going through;
4. Angel is OOC like he's an alternate version of him returned from Hell Dimension at the end of S2. Till now his been most damaged character in S8.
5. Connor
6. Spike written by Joss - even if I'm completely scared of what will happen to him
7. After Twilightgate I read them all, I'll buy the final TPB written by Joss if Spike's in it.
8. Spuffy
If you'll not lock your poll, maybe next year I'll change my votes to the Kaark option, but truly hope not.

Date: 2010-03-07 01:47 pm (UTC)I agree. But I see the comics and the TV show as two very different mediums. And as such they have two very different canons.
2-3. Buffy is a comic character now as in different medium (not TV) and you can laugh (if you can) at what she's going through;
Yes, and as such, she is no longer the character I know and love.
4. Angel is OOC like he's an alternate version of him returned from Hell Dimension at the end of S2. Till now his been most damaged character in S8.
I agree. So far, he is very much an alternate version of the Angel we saw on the show. And yes, he does appear to be damaged in S8.
5. Connor
Without a doubt.
6. Spike written by Joss - even if I'm completely scared of what will happen to him
I still have mixed feelings about this. But I'm right there with you on the scared part.
7. After Twilightgate I read them all, I'll buy the final TPB written by Joss if Spike's in it.
I still read them, but I don't buy them any more.
8. Spuffy
Always.
If you'll not lock your poll, maybe next year I'll change my votes to the Kaark option, but truly hope not.
I'll keep the poll open, but I hope you don't ever have to change your votes! *fingers crossed*

and to me it sounds as though the comics are silly,
flying Buffy? and Angel? and NO Spike ??????????????
we have to have Spike don't we ;-) !!!!!

Date: 2010-03-07 01:37 pm (UTC)Hee! No, there aren't any penguins in the comics. The penguins are a reference to some humourous posts that have been appearing on LJ over the last couple of weeks. They're not meant to be taken seriously. :)
ok now, Buffy finished at seson 7
I'm inclined to agree with you.

Date: 2010-03-07 03:22 pm (UTC)I don't read the comics. And while Mtv was rerunning Season 3 last month I got vibes off Buffy/Angel like I do off all the classic epic romances, e.g. Lois/Clark, so I'm not inclined to believe in what may be undermining it. Still, I can't help but suspect that if this were playing out onscreen I'd be fascinated.
But Doctor Dolittle taught me not to keep tie-ins from other media in continuity in 1968. And again in 1999.

Date: 2010-03-07 07:16 pm (UTC)I really do think the best thing to do is to think of the TV show and the comics as two completely different canons. It's definitely safer that way!
