Books read in April:
19. Blackout by Connie Willis
This is book one of a two part story. The second book (All Clear) is out in October. I loved it, but won't be able to review it properly until after I've read the second half of the story.
It's set in the UK, has time travel, World War 2 history, interesting characters and gripping, interwoven storylines. I have to admit it was a bit slow to begin with, but soon picked up speed. A highly recommended read, but beware: book one does end on a cliffhanger.
20. Changes by Jim Butcher
Book 12 of The Dresden Files and one of the best so far. 'Changes' is an apt title, as Harry goes through many changes in this story. Characters from previous books make an appearance or are mentioned, and there are unexpected twists and turns which conclude in a cliffhanger that makes you want to read the next instalment NOW! If you've read the previous Dresden Files books, you're going to love this one.
21. Tales of the Otherworld by Kelley Armstrong
A collection of short stories/novellas about various characters featured in The Women of the Otherworld series. Most of these were previously available for free online, but have now been put together in two wonderful antholgies (the first being Men of the Otherworld which was released last year), with all profits going to charity.
I enjoyed them all, but my favourite by far is Beginnings, which tells the story of how Clay and Elena first met. Worth buying for this story alone.
22. Kindred by Octavia E. Butler
This is a book that will stay with me for a long time. It tells the story of Dana, a young black woman in 1976 Los Angeles, who suddenly and inexplicably finds herself transported to the Deep South in the early 19th century. Powerful and thought-provoking.
Up next: The Fiery Cross by Diana Gabaldon, book 5 of the Outlander series.

Date: 2010-05-01 01:26 pm (UTC)Kindred is the first book of Ms. Butler's I've read, so I'll have to look up her other work. She was a very talented lady.

Date: 2010-05-01 09:29 pm (UTC)Thanks for that. I love Connie Willis but if book one ends on a cliffhanger I might wait until they're both out. Fortunately I'm so far behind with my To Be Read pile that this won't be a problem!
