IMO this is professional fanfic and unless Whedon does something brilliant in the finale I'll be glad I never read the comics (though I've skimmed through a few).
I see the comics and the TV show as two very different mediums. And as such they have two very different canons. I've read all of the comics (although I don't buy them any more), and they are nothing at all like the TV show I know and love. They don't even look like the same characters.
