Fuck. Central Birmingham has been evacuated because of a bomb threat. My sister and her husband are there tonight. She called us to let us know that they had been evacuated from Broad Street and were now in a nearby pub. The phone connection has now gone dead. Fuck.

What's wrong with these people? I'm so angry right now.

Update: My sister and her husband are out of Central Birmingham. They're still trying to make their way home, but they're fine. The police have carried out a series of controlled explosions, four of them on a bus.

Update 2: Central Birmingham has now been reopened. Even though nothing appears to have been found in the end, I have nothing but praise for the Birmingham police. They were acting on intelligence that there had been "a real and significant threat to lives" in Central Birmingham last night. In the aftermath of the London bombings, I think they did exactly the right thing.

Aw, crap, Cal! That just sucks!

I'm sure the connection has been interrupted by overload of people calling their loved ones. I'm glad you got to hear from your sister before that happened.

The world is a fucked up place.

Don't worry - they'll be evacuating all sorts of places at the drop of a parcel for weeks. Although if it is Al Qaeda it seems that they can only really organise one attack every five or six months, and so in reality it is pretty unlikely that any of the evacuations will be for anything really threatening at all. And on the whole evacuating places is fine - it's when they don't that people get hurt.

There's no way you can't worry but it does probably mean that phone lines are overwhelmed or cut off. Keeping good thoughts coming your way Cal.

I saw the news and thought first it was "our" Birmingham in Alabama, and was surprised the hurricane was expected to cause major problems that far north. Then I realized it was "your" Birmingham, saw why, and got angry.

Natural disasters are terrible, but at least there's no malice in them. Why do people feel the need to screw this world up more than it is already?

I don't understand people who do things like this at all. It makes me so angry! At least all turned out well this time, but it's a scary world we live in.

It galls me to think people are calling in bomb threats to get their rocks off, knowing the city is supersensitive at this time.

I'm glad your sister and everyone else is okay.
