Remembering Nan

If it hadn't been for Nan, I would never have found the S'cubie board (or LJ) in the first place, or had the opportunity to become a part of this fandom I love so much. Her words opened up a whole new world to me. I hope she knew how much she meant to so many people.

I hadn't had a proper conversation with Nan for some time, but I often came across comments from her on the Reading Rec thread over at S3 or on livejournal. RL issues had kept me away from the internet and the board for a while, but I always knew she was there. Seeing a comment from her always made me smile. She was never afraid to tell people exactly what she thought, but in her own unique way. I loved that about her. I loved her.

Nan was a remarkable woman. She was someone who I admired, and whose opinion I valued and respected. I wasn't as close to her as some of the S'cubies were, but I always considered her to be a friend. I hope she felt the same way about me.

I still can't believe she's gone. The world is an emptier place without her. I miss her already.

She was loved and respected by so many people. Under the cut are links to some of the many posts that have been appearing all over LJ since the news of Nan's passing broke, starting with the original devastating post from [livejournal.com profile] julia_here.

If anyone would prefer their link to be removed, please let me know. :)

Just before checking my FL and seeing your tribute to Nan, I'd only just finished reading her last 25 posts on the S3 board (I haven't been active there for a couple of years). I wanted to *hear* her voice, and get a sense of how she'd been before she dropped off the board last week and people became concerned and started trying to track her down. From what I'd gleaned from reading current posts since yesterday, recently she'd been experiencing a lot of fatigue and had just gotten new windows and a new furnace for her house.

Her final post on the board was the morning of 2/28, in which she reported feeling MUCH better and well rested (from a recent bout of what she figured was a lower GI track flu or infection and the ever present fatigue). On 2/22 - she'd gleefully reported that she'd just paid off her car the day before - it was hers, free and clear. Then she joked that since she'd just paid it off something was bound to go wrong with it.

Just two things I picked out that bit particularly deep.

From what I've heard, things were just starting to look up with Nan. She was just getting to a place in her life where she could stop worrying and settle down to writing full time. I feel so sad that she never got the chance to do that. She had so many more stories to tell.

*hugs you*

This is a wonderful post, thank you for sharing it with us. I only knew her through her writing but she was indeed a special person who gave so much joy to so many people. My thoughts and best wishes are with those who knew her better than I ::many hugs::

Cal, this is a wonderful, wonderful thing you've done here. Is it possible to send a copy of this to Nan's brother? I'm sure he'd be pleased to see how loved Nan was by folks who'd never met her.

Thanks for this; you are a generous, generous, soul. *hugs*

Thanks, Mary. I needed to do something...anything. I've linked to it over at S3. I'm not sure how easy it would be to send it to Nan's brother, but it's certainly something to think about.

I thought it would be a good idea to gather as many of the posts in one place as I could find. Nan was loved and respected by so many. {{{Mary}}}

You may want to add this to your listing:

It's a lovely tribute from Chris Lee.

{{{Cal}}}

Nearly everyone on my flist has written a mention or tribute to Nan's memory - from A/B 'shippers like Chris, to spuffy 'shippers who'd read her books.

This was a much loved lady; she deserved a better life and a much, much, much longer one.

I still can't believe it.

I'm going to look for more tributes to add tomorrow. It would be nice to get as many as possible added.

So many beautiful words. It's a little overwhelming, but it helps that so many people held Nan in such high regard. Not that I'm surprised by that. Nan was (I still can't get my head around saying "was" *sigh*) a remarkable lady. *hugs you*

Thank you for putting these posts together.
This does indeed give some idea of the breadth of Nan's influence and the death of affection she garnered.

It does not surprise me in the least that so many people felt the need to post in Nan's memory.

Depth of affection. I meant, sigh,

Comments on Nan's stories are littered with my typos and once more she was her gracious self and would assure me that she did the same in the journals of others...I suspect it was far more rare than she lead me to believe. Jane

i>I'm missing her already. *sigh*

I understand.
I appreciate the chance to talk about her here.

My husband has been good as I've talked about her quite a bit over the last few years. I even told my school class last year about the lady in America with a lot of snow. They were suitably impressed and I told Nan.

She hadn't been posting or emailing back for the last few times I emailed her but as she was still posting at SS3, I hadn't realised she was unwell.
