I have a 30" widescreen TV which we are hoping will not last much longer - it's a Phillips and is 7 years old. So far the tube went (after 5 years) and the 'on' button has broken twice. First time we had an engineer fix it (under guarantee) and second time hubby fixed it (boo!!).

We are looking at buying an LCD widescreen next time. We are also looking at the new High Definition TVs which are fantastic, but we are looking to buy in a couple of years (when I'm assuming the price will come down a bit).

If we were replacing it today we'd go for a larger widescreen LCD.

Have fun looking for TVs (very confusing!!).

Thanks, Karen! It's definitely confusing. So many different types and sizes to look out for. I think we're going to go for an LCD, but I'm not sure about the size yet. I don't think we want anything too big, but we don't want to go too small, either.

Mo idea what our current box is, other than a sort of middling widescreen CRT model with crappy speakers, but Monday should see the arrival of the 42" plasma hubby has chosen (and waited 2 weeks for Bainbridges to get it back in stock) after spending days with his nose in the likes of "Which TV" etc.

I now have an LCD one in my bedroom - S2C thought it would leave more storage space behind it than the original one, which I gave to my Mum a little while ago when her TV died. The only problem is that it is a bit directional - you can't see the wonderfully clear picture from as acute an angle to the screen as you could with the old fashioned one. In my case this means that if I watch whilst lying down, with it up above the end of the bed, people's faces become caverns of light and dark. I would suggest that you work out what is the worst possible angle to screen that you are going to be likely to have in your everyday TV watching, and make sure that the picture is clear from that angle in the shop before you buy, as they all look wonderful straight on, but from off at one side it can be very different!

We've got a black 30" widescreen which Chris hates (well, he is fed up with it and wants a new lcd silver home cinema surround sound all singing all dancing set). I did suggest a decorating accident whereby a tin of paint got spilled over the tele and thus got replaced on the insurance, but he didn't think that was a good idea.

Bigger is better up to a certain point - you don't want the TV to completely overpower the room, or not be able to get far enough away to see the picture properly.

And I'd definitely go for HD technology, even though it isn't widely broadcast at the moment, you don't want to have to change the TV again in a couple of years. Plasma screens are great, but so expensive, and you need to make sure you have a suitable bit of wall to hang them on (which we haven't).

I've got a 32" Sony Trinitron. It's the old tube kind, and we got it as a hand me down. It's not too big, but I certainly don't think it needs to be that big... I was quite happy with the 27" we had before. (Until it broke that is.)

I agree that it might be a good idea to go with HD so you don't have to upgrade when it becomes popular.

I don't know what kind of picture is best, but let me know what you find out because mine is dying in a big way so I'll be needing to do the same research soon.:)
