Wow, that was some episode of Doctor Who, wasn't it? I was worried it wouldn't be able to live up to the hype, but I should have known Neil Gaiman wouldn't let me down! I watched it late last night while under the influence of a few glasses of wine (I'd been to my brother-in-law's 40th birthday party), so will need to rewatch it later to make sure I didn't miss anything important, but first impressions? Fabulous!
Suranne Jones was outstanding as Idris, and I have to admit the final scene between her and the Doctor made me cry. Just perfectly acted by both of them.
And just because I can: Michael Sheen!! He may have been just a voice, but he was a good voice! :D
I also thought Rory and Amy's scenes inside the TARDIS were genuinely scary and worked incredibly well. The only slightly annoying bit was when they made us think Rory was dead yet again. Of course, I knew he wouldn't be and that it was all in their heads, but I really don't want to keep on seeing him die (or almost die) every week. My only concern is that this is all foreshadowing, and the season really will end with Rory dying. And I honestly don't think my heart could take that!
That being said, I like seeing Amy and Rory acting together as a team. It gives their marriage substance, which is good to see. And I loved the final discussion about their sleeping arrangements. Bunk beds! Lol!
It was also interesting that Idris/TARDIS decided to talk to Rory instead of Amy. She seemed to have as much of a soft spot for him as I do! "The pretty one" indeed.
When you think about it, how perfect is it that the Doctor's wife turned out to be the TARDIS? The one true constant in his life. It's ridiculous just how incredibly happy this makes me feel. :)
And as to the final words that Idris stated: The only water in the forest is the river.
Well, we can guess it has something to do with River Song, but what does it mean exactly? Hmm...
Fascinating stuff!
I can honestly say I loved every second of this episode. It's going to take me some time (and a rewatch) to digest everything that happened in it. It's just so rich with information (including some wonderful references to times gone by), that I want to savour every little morsel of it.
The Doctor's Wife is definitely an episode that's going to spawn a million fanfic and meta posts. And I'm already itching to read them!
I'm still all *flaily* about Matt Smith, because I thought he was even more outstanding in this episode. He really *is* the Doctor, isn't he? He impresses me more and more every week. :)
Roll on next Saturday!

Date: 2011-05-15 10:38 am (UTC)The only shame is that sometimes they delivered their lines in a such a 'quick fire' fashion and it was occasionally easy to miss them. Have to admit I missed some of it until I watched Confidential.
Good stuff though :)
