Earth Tremor in the UK

We had an earth tremor about 40 minutes ago. My whole house was shaking! Poor K's bed was moving, as was the chair I was sitting on. It must have only lasted about 20 seconds, but it felt like it was never going to end! Everything was moving. The last time we had anything like this was about 6 years ago, but this felt much stronger than that one did.

It was quite scary while it was happening. My poor legs felt like jelly when I rushed in to K's room. She's sleeping now, but it frightened her while it was happening.

Wow. I've never felt or heard anything quite like that before. I could even hear and feel the rumbling under my feet.

Poor baby:(...glad you're okay. I was in a small earthquake long ago, and it was quite enough for me to not wish it on anyone...

We had one several years ago. I used to live near a rail road, so the shaking was old hat for me, it was the rumbling that was the most frightening for me. I'm glad to hear all is now well at your house.

There was one about 30 miles from my house a few years ago and I didn't even realize what it was when it happened. We live by a busy highway with lots of semi-trucks going through and it felt like one was rumbling past, but there wasn't even a car on the road. I remembering wondering what the heck it was and forgetting about it until the next day when everyone was talking about it. I live in Missouri (which i'm sure you know) and there's a big fault line running through it, so everyone expects something major to happen one day.

I'm glad you're okay even though you got the jelly-knees : )

Earthquakes really are quite funky, even if you've been in one before... because every quake is different. Hearing the rumbling, especially as it moves off into the distance is pretty freaky, too (we were able to do that the last time we had an earthquake here).

I've just seen this on the BBC News page Cal - I'm glad you didn't get any damage. It was quite a big quake by the sound of it! Goodness sake - what's happening to the UK!!!!!

Just waking up to the news. Glad all OK. Kent, as far as I know, remains untouched! But then i slept through the big hurricane, so cannot be trusted for reports of nightly weather happenings!

My husband slept through the '87 hurricane

Which was pretty remarkable seeing as a corner fell off our house causing the whole house to lurch sideways ( it was a timber framed thatched cottage ) and a tree missed the bedroom by inches !

Ha! As for sleeping through hurricane, let me elaborate. Not entirely true - I lived on top of Wimbledon Hill at that time. My bedroom curtains came blowing horizontally into room, i got up, walked to window and saw three trees going down the road on their roots, as if they were in a Disney film. I thought, "that's odd" and went back to bed and straight to sleep!

Didn't stir again until phone began ringing off the hook with queries from family. i was still fast asleep because road outside was blocked, so nice and quiet!

We had no phones and no power so I had no idea what had really happened

I thought it was just localised damage caused by the gale so set off to try to go to work :)

This was foolish , after several detours due to blocked roads and noticing large chunks of masonary and falled trees everywhere I finally twigged that there might just be a bit of a major issue :) but it wasn't till I got somewhere where the power was still on that I found out what had happened ( Our power and phones were out for over a week)

I'm miffed now because I'm being told that the earthquake was felt here but we slept through it

We slept through the earthquake too. As for the hurricane, it was my last night in hospital with my very new baby. It woke me up but I thought it was just a few tin cans rattling around in the courtyard so I went back to sleep. Six-day-old babies are far more effective at waking you up than a mere hurricane!

My brother did that too. He slept through the entire thing, woke up late because his alarm hadn't gone off and then couldn't believe it when his entire road was blocked by fallen trees!

I felt it too. It shook my bathroom cabinet and sounded like my washing machine starting up. As that wasn't on, I thought that it might be the boiler threatening to explode!

Wow. I felt and heard nothing - and we're a fair few miles closer to the epicentre than you. I slept through the Dudley earthquake too, mind you. I can't quite get my head round the concept of "epicentre" and "Market Rasen" - we used to go through there when we lived in Grimsby and it's such a sleepy little place.

Pretty amazing and surreal, wasn't it? We felt it in Manchester. I was just looking out of the window because it was windy and suddenly the house shook viloently along with a tremendous banging. I thought it was just a freak gale until my son shot out of his bedroom and said was that an earthquake? Yes, it leaves on pretty shocked.

I heard about that on the news and wondered if any of my friends across the pond was affected! (((((hugs))))) I remember waking up once as a youngster and my whole bed was rattling. Earth tremors in New Jersey are pretty rare, but it was scary!
