Not counting fanfic and graphic novels/comic books, I have only read four books so far this year...and three of those have been in the last couple of weeks. I expect that number to have doubled in the next few weeks, as I've really caught the book reading bug again. I'm always reading something, but fanfic was my main source of reading material at the beginning of the year. Now it's back to books...

First up is Chasing Silver by Jamie Craig aka [livejournal.com profile] eurydice72 and her writing partner [livejournal.com profile] pepperlandgirl4.

Born in 2057, Remy Capra never expected a second chance at life in Los Angeles, or her only chance at love in 2007. On the run from a cop who cares more about pain than justice, Remy inadvertently goes 75 years back in time and abruptly arrives at the feet of P.I. Nathan Pierce. Remy needs help, and Nathan finds he wants to offer her even more. There are threats from all sides - are their street smarts and unexpected passion enough to keep them together...and alive?

As an avid reader of [livejournal.com profile] eurydice72's Spuffy fanfiction, I thought I'd give this book a try. It was exactly what I expected it to be - an erotic romantic adventure. The time travel element was also a very welcome added bonus. An enjoyable book, which I liked enough to be interested in reading the sequel (which will be published later this year). If you're looking for a fun and sexy read, this could be the book for you. :)

Anything Goes by John Barrowman, with his sister Carole E Barrowman

What can I say about this book, other than that I loved it? An uplifting, moving and hysterically funny read. If you like John, you'll love this. Told in his own inimitable style, it will have you laughing out loud one minute and move you the next. Highly recommended.

Time To Go Back by Mabel Esther Allan

After a disastrous protest meeting in Trafalgar Square sixteen-year-old Sarah Farrant is ill, unhappy and at odds with her former friends, as well as with her mother. At this time of self-searching she discovers the wartime poems of Larke Ellesmere, who would have been her aunt if she had lived. The poems vividly evoke the bombing of Merseyside and Larke's moving love story.

This is a book I first read as a child, but recently decided to revisit after coming across a used copy on Amazon. I was concerned that reading it again as an adult would change my opinion of this much loved story, but I found it just as magical as I ever did. Time travel is something that has fascinated me for as long as I can remember, and this book is one that haunted me for a long time after I first read it all those years ago. Excellent.

Random Acts of Heroic Love by Danny Scheinmann

1992: Leo Deakin wakes up in a hospital somewhere in South America. His girlfriend Eleni is dead and Leo doesn't know where he is or how she died. He blames himself for the tragedy and is sucked into a spiral of despair. But Leo is about to discover something that will change his life for ever.

1917: Moritz Daniecki is a fugitive from a Siberian POW camp. Seven thousand kilometres over the Russian steppes separate him from his village and his sweetheart, whose memory has kept him alive through carnage and captivity. The Great War may be over, but Moritz now faces a perilous journey across a continent riven by civil war. When Moritz finally limps back into his village to claim the hand of the woman he left behind, will she still be waiting?

An incredible and moving story that will stay with me for a long time to come. It takes you on an emotional rollercoaster of a journey, but one that is ultimately very rewarding. I'm not ashamed to admit that this book made me cry. It's a very powerful story that sometimes takes you into difficult territory, but is worth every step of the journey that you take with both Leo and Moritz. It is a work of fiction, but one that is based on fact. A devastatingly powerful read that I highly recommend.

I've also been reading the BtVS S8 and AtS S6 comic books, and the omnibus editions of the BtVS graphic novels (I have the first three so far). All fairly enjoyable, but a poor substitute for the real thing.
