I too *heart* Rory. And I think they do a pretty good job of balancing Rory and Amy taking turns needing to be rescued. I was just glad that they remembered he has medical training and that he got to put it to use.
I don't have cable so I haven't seen GOT yet. :( :( :( But yes, in the books, Tyrion is just that awesome.
