My thoughts on various TV shows...

True Blood

I have mixed feelings on the finale of S3, but I think the overall season was a strong one and worked well for me. The characters had all progressed from where they were at the end of S2, and Sookie FINALLY had her eyes opened to how completely and utterly wrong for her Bill is at this moment in time. In fact, I don't think Sookie's ready to be with anyone right now - no matter how much I enjoy seeing her and Eric together. ;)

I wasn't sure about the direction the show is taking Sam, Arlene or Lafayette, but I'm willing to put my trust in the writers that they will do the right thing in S4, and not ruin some of my favourite characters on the show.

I can't believe we have to wait unti next June for S4! It seems like such a long way away...

But at least I'll have The Vampire Diaries to help ease my pain!

The Vampire Diaries

This show just keeps on getting better and better with every episode! There are so many twists and turns, and the pacing is just perfect. Damon still remains the character I find most interesting, but I'm enjoying more or less all of the characters. I love Stefan, and his relationship with his brother fascinates me.

But Damon is such a complex character, and is one of those characters that (like Spike before him) has somehow managed to get under my skin. He intrigues me, and I want to peel away his layers one by one, until I get to the real Damon beneath that hard vampire exterior.

Anyway, I digress...

I think Katherine is going to be a great villain, and I was taken completely by surprise when she turned Caroline. I wasn't sure I was going to like Caroline as a vampire at first, but it's actually working out very well so far. And I'm already starting to ship Stefan/Caroline. The chemistry between them is amazing! And then that would leave the path open for Damon/Elena - although I have to admit I don't want that to happen any time soon. Building up to Damon/Elena slowly with lots of UST would be absolutely fine by me. ;)

Supernatural

I have to admit that although I enjoyed the episode, I was left feeling a little underwhelmed by it - which is pretty much how I felt about most of S5 if I'm honest. It just felt like there was something...missing (and no, I don't mean Castiel, although I do like the character). I was glad that Dean decided to stay with Lisa and Ben at the end of the episode, as I would have thought less of him if he'd walked out on them without a backwards glance. Yes, Sam is his brother, but he's made a life with Lisa and Ben and should at least try to make it work.

I'll be sticking with the show until the bitter end, but for me it isn't really living up to the highs of seasons 3 and 4, which is when I thought the show was at its best. Hopefully it will pick up again over the coming weeks...

Being Erica

Being Erica is one of the shows I've been looking forward to the most. I don't know why, but it moves me in ways no other current show does, and I find it almost therapeutic to watch. I love everything about it: the characters, the storyline, the time travel...just everything!

And now this season we have...group therapy. I don't know quite what I was expecting when Erica went through that door at the end of S2, but group therapy wasn't it. I was fully expecting her to progress to being a therapist like Dr. Tom at some point, but I didn't think group therapy would be the next step towards that goal.

But now it's happened, I think it's the perfect direction for the show to take. It works so well, and I love that Erica doesn't just fall into her new role, but struggles with it a little at first - and how devastated she is to find out that she's not Dr. Tom's only patient after all.

I'm excited to see where the show is going to take us from here, and I can't wait to find out where Kai is going to fit into the new storyline. He was the best thing to come out of S2 for me, and I have to admit I missed seeing him in the premiere. I almost expected him to turn up in group therapy, but that was probably just wishful thinking on my part.

I'm so looking forward to seeing the next episode! :)

The Young Ones

From the BBC website:

What if it were possible to turn back time? Could it be that we have the power to think ourselves young again? That’s the extraordinary claim of an experiment first conducted 30 years ago which the BBC is now re-staging.

Six well-loved celebrities in their 70s and 80s – Liz Smith, Lionel Blair, Dickie Bird, Sylvia Syms, Derek Jameson and Kenneth Kendall – have agreed to turn back the clock to 1975 when they were in their heyday. For one week they will live, work and eat in the 1970s to see if they can regain their youth.

I found this show fascinating to watch and incredibly moving at times, with some interesting and thought-provoking results.

Mad Men

Please note: I've only ever seen S1 of this show, so I'm still only just familiarising myself with the characters again at this point.

I've only seen the first three eps of this season (I'm watching it as it airs in the UK), but I'm loving it so far. The characters are complex and interesting to watch, and I'm looking forward to seeing what direction the show is going to take us next. Of course, after seeing how awesome the show is, I'm going to have to go back and watch all the episodes I've missed, as the characters are definitely in completely different places to where they were at the end of S1. But Don is still as frustratingly fascinating as ever!

71 Degrees North

I watch various 'reality TV' shows (such as Strictly Come Dancing and The X-Factor), but I rarely find them interesting enough to talk about them here. This one, however, is different.

71 Degrees North is an adventure show, set amongst the icy glaciers and snowy landscape of Norway. It mixes spectacular experiences and pure danger, with sheer entertainment and breathtaking scenery. Culminating inside the Arctic Circle, this eight part series stars 10 celebrities, fighting their way to the most northern part of mainland Europe.

For me, what sets this apart from other 'reality' TV shows is the sheer guts and determination it must take for the contestants to overcome the challenges they are faced with. Remember, these are ordinary people. They may be 'celebrities', yes, but when it comes to some of the extraordinary things they are asked to do they're no different from you or I. On tonight's show, for instance, they were asked to sleep overnight in a tent that was suspended high above the ground on the side of a cliff - in freezing cold temperatures! I couldn't (and wouldn't) attempt to do it myself, but it makes for interesting viewing.

Words of the Blitz

Fascinating account of the Blitz, using the letters and diaries of ordinary men and women. Read by actors including Dominic West, Sheila Hancock and Russell Tovey, the programme uses actual footage of Great Britain during the war that brings the Blitz all too vividly to life. Incredibly moving, and a must-see for anyone interested in this time period. Highly recommended.

Still to watch: Fringe, House, Dexter, Grey's Anatomy and several UK shows (Downton Abbey and DCI Banks to name but two).

I obviously watch way too much TV, but that's what can happen when your other half works nights! ;)

ETA: Sorry about the coding screw-up! It should be fixed now...
