(TV) Fandom Talk
Aug. 22nd, 2009 04:30 pmIsn't it funny how quickly things can change?
In my LJ post about fandom (flocked) last week, I talked about my everlasting love of the Buffyverse and Spike, and how no other character or show could ever move me in the same way. And while that is still largely true (Spike and the Buffyverse will always be my number one), I have since watched the first nine episodes of S2 of True Blood. Now I loved S1 - it was cracktastic TV at its best - but S2 has completely blown it out of the water. And the unexpected has happened: a new character love has been born. I wasn't expecting it, and I didn't particularly want it. It just happened.
Eric Northman didn't have much of an impact on me in S1. Yes, he was a good looking and interesting character, but that's as far as it went. But S2 has been a different story. His character is turning out to be much more complex than I first thought. He has layers that are just begging to be peeled away, and we're beginning to see what lies underneath that tough and evil exterior. And with the peeling of his layers, my attraction to him has grown. I like pretty people as much as anyone, but I didn't really find Eric attractive (good looking, yes, but I wasn't attracted to him) until I'd started to fall in love with him as a character. And now I can't understand why I never saw how pretty (and tall!) he was in the first place.
And I've even been seeking out True Blood fanfiction. Specifically Eric/Sookie. *facepalm* I feel like such a traitor!
I can't see myself ever becoming as passionate about True Blood and Eric as I am about the Buffyverse and Spike, but I can't say that I really want to be. The Buffyverse is a love affair that will last a lifetime for me, but being an active member of a fandom can be stressful and, yes, even painful at times. I don't want to become involved in shipper wars or fandom kerfuffles. As much as I love being involved in the Buffyverse and Spike fandom, at this stage in my fandom life all I want is to watch, read and enjoy. Anything more than that would likely send me running for the hills!
And I have to say I'm happy with that. :)
I have so much going on in my fandom life right now. I have my enduring love of the Buffyverse and Spike. I have my very new love of Eric and True Blood (I can't believe there are only 3 eps of S2 left!), which is quickly becoming my second favourite fandom. Then in September Supernatural will be back (oh boys, how I've missed you!), which will most likely mean a change of LJ/DW header to go with the new season. *g* I also have Doctor Who, Being Human, Lost, Dexter, House, Grey's Anatomy and Dollhouse to look forward to (Dollhouse started off weak, but I came to love it by the end of the season - and Epitaph One blew me away!). And hopefully, I'll also have new Torchwood at some point in the future *fingers crossed*.
Ooh...and last but not least, I'll also have Lie To Me and Caprica for my JM fix! *squee*
OMG, I really am turning into a fandom whore! :D
But seriously...
No, my fandom life couldn't get any better than it is right now. And I'm happier with it than I've been in a long time. Maybe because I'm happier in RL too? *ponders*
But yes, it really is a funny old world, isn't it? :)

Date: 2009-08-22 04:09 pm (UTC)I haven't fallen so hard for a character/pairing since...well, since Spike and Spuffy. I'm searching out fanvids, fanfiction, icons and pic posts. I think besotted is exactly the right word. I can't seem to get enough!
I think the Buffyverse will always hold a special place in my heart, but being involved in a new fandom is fun! :D

Date: 2009-08-22 04:11 pm (UTC)I've only read the first three books of the series (and that was some time ago), but I've just started to catch up on them. Book 4 is really feeding my Eric/Sookie love! :)

Date: 2009-08-22 04:16 pm (UTC)I gather that in the book series (which I haven't read but am sampling Book 4 of at the moment) Eric becomes a very prominent character.

Date: 2009-08-22 04:23 pm (UTC)I read the first three books several years ago (so can't remember everything that happened), but have recently started book 4. It's definitely feeding my Eric/Sookie love so far.

Date: 2009-08-22 05:41 pm (UTC)Bill seems watered down next to Eric.
If you can, watch HBO's Generation Kill. That's where I first saw Alexander Skaarsgard - and he is awesome in an awesome series.
Tall? Hah! The Boy is 6'4"...Tall dude, yes.
Although I still love the buffyandangelverse, I'm now into Bones and TB, with both feet and loving it. I read a lot of Bones fanfic, but have been resisting the TB fic. There's only so much time.....

Date: 2009-08-23 12:02 pm (UTC)I agree, everything about Bill seems smaller next to Eric. LOL!
I've been hearing good things about Generation Kill. I'll definitely look out for it!
I know! I can't believe I never noticed before. :D
I think I'll always love the Buffyverse (and Spike and Angel, of course), but it's nice to be part of a new fandom. :)

Date: 2009-08-23 12:10 pm (UTC)Eric didn't have much of an impact on me in S1, but that's all changed now! *g*
I have the Caprica pilot downloaded ready to watch. I'll probably leave it for a while, though. Maybe wait until closer to when the series airs.
I haven't seen The Mentalist. I'll have to look out for it. :)
I very rarely watch anything in real time as it airs, especially now P is working nights again. I usually wait until I have several episodes recorded on my Sky box, and then have a marathon session when I have the time! :)
