Doctor Who

What a fabulous episode to go into the hiatus with. I loved it!

I'd guessed a while ago where they were heading with River, so as soon as I saw that Amy and Rory's baby was named Melody Pond, I knew that I had been right. So the revelation at the end didn't come as a surprise to me at all. But I still thought it worked very well, and I'm more than happy to have been proved right! River is a fabulous character, so I'm beyond happy that she's turned out to be Rory and Amy's daughter.

I was all of a squee when The Last Centurion made his appearance. Oh Rory, how I love thee! That scene couldn't have been any more perfect, could it? Be still my beating heart! But...

I still have a terrible feeling that Rory won't make it out of this season alive. :(

And this is one time I really, really want to be proved wrong.

I know nothing about future episodes, so this is all pure speculation on my part, but I've felt for a while now that Rory dying (or almost dying) in so many episodes has been foreshadowing of what's to come. And the scene where River and Rory meet in this episode just reinforces that feeling. The way she looked at him with such emotion! There was such an underlying sense of despair there, that I can't help but feel that there was so much more going on in that scene than just a daughter seeing her father after a long time apart.

This is also pure speculation, but is Rory the 'good man' who River kills? I hope not, but at this point I think it's a very real possibility.

I'm probably reading far too much into it, but there you have it...

There was so much to love about this episode, and it set things up nicely for the second half of the season. I loved the Doctor's reaction when he realised who River really is, and that reaction made me love The Doctor/ River even more than I already did. :)

The only thing that jolted me out of the episode slightly was when the Doctor said that he has never had children. Considering the fact that (as we all know) the Doctor used to travel with his granddaughter, I'm not quite sure how that could be true!

But other than that I adored everything about this episode, from the Sontaran warrior/nurse to Madame Vastra and her human companion Jenny. S6 is shaping up to become my favourite season of New Who so far, and this episode is one of the reasons why.

There were so many twists and turns, and I was completely taken by surprise when Amy's baby turned out to be made of Flesh, with the real Melody already taken far, far away. I really shouldn't have been surprised, but I was. I know some people find Amy annoying, but I found her reaction to having her baby ripped from her arms incredibly moving. Probably a very personal reaction on my part, but one that I couldn't help but feel. I have to admit that I wasn't very impressed by Karen Gillan's acting in S5, but think she has gone from strength to strength this year.

Matt Smith (as usual) played the Doctor to perfection. His despair when he realised what had happened to baby Melody/River was palpable, but unfortunately the Doctor has become too arrogant by far, and now we have seen the beginning of his fall (which River warned Rory about) - starting with Rory and Amy's baby (River) being taken from them.

And now we have to wait until the autumn to see what happens next. :(

I'm not going to say roll on the autumn, as I'm quite looking forward to the summer, but it's going to seem like a hell of a long time to wait!

But at least those of us who enjoy them will have S4 of True Blood and new Torchwood to see us through, so maybe the wait won't be quite so bad after all? :)

And I'm looking forward to Case Histories, which begins airing on BBC1 in ten minutes. It's based on Kate Atkinson's Jackson Brodie series of books, which I love. I so hope it's good. I can't wait!
